Slow-moving snowstorm pummels Midwest, heads east

CHICAGO (AP) ? A slow-moving storm that has paralyzed parts of the nation's midsection for days with heavy, wet snow that strained power lines, clogged roadways and delayed hundreds of flights, dumped at least 6 inches of snow on western Michigan early Wednesday as it churned eastward.

The storm that made travel perilous from the Oklahoma Panhandle to the Great Lakes on Tuesday was expected to linger for another day over Chicago and parts of the Midwest. Up to a foot of snow was forecast for northern New England on Wednesday evening.

Up to 4 inches of wet, heavy snow smothered metro Chicago on Tuesday, while as much as 7 ? inches blanketed some northern suburbs, said Matt Friedlein, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in northern Illinois. A chilly rain kept city streets slick during the Wednesday morning commute.

Other parts of the Midwest were hit much harder, with more than 15 inches of snow in parts of Oklahoma, up to a foot in Kansas and up to 13? inches in Missouri. In Iowa, officials warned of hazardous travel conditions as temperatures fell and ice formed on snowy roads.

Keith Voss, manager of the Fareway Grocery in Centerville, Iowa, said he was planning to close up five hours early Tuesday because only a handful of customers had come in.

"The weather here has been really bad. They couldn't get here, most of them, if they wanted to," Voss said. "The town has been pretty rough traveling."

With the power out and an electric water pump silenced, Shannon Wickware and a house full of relatives in Woodward, Okla., which received 15 inches of snow Monday, had only to fetch a pile of snow from outside whenever they got thirsty.

"It's just snow. That's all we can see," Wickware said Tuesday. "We've been trying to melt snow and drinking that. And we've been just trying to keep the fire going."

The weather service said early Wednesday that 6 inches had fallen on Grand Haven and Muskegon in western Michigan, while some Detroit suburbs saw 4 inches of snow. The state's highest accumulations, totaling 5 to 8 inches, were forecast for the rural Thumb region, surrounded on three sides by Lake Huron.

Fueled by a strong low pressure system, the crescent-shape storm began Sunday in Texas, then headed north. On Monday, whiteout conditions made virtually all Texas Panhandle roads impassable, although primary roadways reopened Tuesday when the sun emerged and began to thaw ice and snow-packed surfaces. A hurricane-force gust of 75 mph was recorded in Amarillo, where 17 inches of snow fell. The heaviest snowfall was in Follett, Texas, with 21 inches.

The system, more common in early spring, contained so much moisture that it was difficult to forecast where it would rain or where it would snow ? or even if the snow would accumulate, Friedlein said.

At one point, snow fell at a rate of 1-2 inches per hour on the North Side of Chicago and northern counties, he said.

The blizzard came on the heels of another massive snowstorm last week, but experts cautioned that the snowpack now resting on the Plains would likely not bring sufficient relief after months of drought.

"If we get one more storm like this, with widespread 2 inches of moisture, we will continue to chip away at the drought," said meteorologist Mike Umscheid of the National Weather Service office in Dodge City. "But to claim the drought is over or ending is way too premature."

The Missouri Department of Transportation issued a rare "no travel" advisory, urging people to stay off highways except in case of a dire emergency. Conditions were so bad that snowplows slid into ditches, underlining the danger.

The weight of the snow strained power lines and cut electricity to more than 100,000 homes and businesses. Hospitals closed outpatient centers and urgent-care clinics. Early Wednesday, some 40,000 customers in Michigan were without power.

At least three deaths were blamed on the blizzard.

In the northwest Oklahoma town of Woodward, a person was killed after 15 inches of snow brought down part of a roof. The storm was also blamed for the deaths of two people who were killed in rollover crashes Monday on Interstate 70 in Kansas.

Heavy snow pulled down large trees and caused roofs to cave in at businesses in Belton and Warrensburg, Mo. In Columbia, a canopy over gas pumps collapsed at a convenience store.

By late Tuesday afternoon, airlines had canceled almost 500 flights at Chicago's O'Hare and Midway international airports. Some 100 flights were sidelined Wednesday, and yet more were delayed.

Many commuters appeared to heed warnings and either stayed home or left work early. Chicago train cars were half empty during the evening commute, and traffic on some expressways flowed as if it was Sunday afternoon.

"This is fabulous," said Mitzi Norton, 34, of suburban Elmwood Park, as she rode a train home. "I wish I drove."

Christie budget raids NJ clean energy fund

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Gov. Chris Christie plans to raid New Jersey's clean energy fund of $152 million to help balance next year's budget.

The governor laid out his $32.9 billion spending proposal on Tuesday, outlining plans to increase public school aid and allow more poor people to enroll in Medicaid. But he didn't mention plans to transfer money for clean energy rebates into the general fund for the fourth straight year.

The money is paid by utility users and is supposed to encourage residents to buy energy-efficient appliances and weatherize their homes.

Christie took $89 million from the fund this year and $210 million the year before.

Sen. Bob Smith of Piscataway says the way the governor is using the money amounts to an additional tax on residents.

Fat Head ? Review: Rich Foods Poor Foods

A friend of mine once lectured me on why I shouldn?t buy milk unless I was sure it came from a cow that wasn?t treated with hormones.? The lecture might?ve gone on longer, but she had to step outside to smoke a cigarette.? I kid you not.

When it comes to improving health, I believe in tackling the big issues first and foremost ? like quitting smoking before worrying if your milk came from a hormone-free cow.? If we could just convince people to give up sugar, refined grains and chemically-extracted seed oils (the dietary equivalents of smoking, in my opinion), they?d already be far along the path to improved health, even if they buy their meats and eggs at Wal-Mart.

Moving farther down the path to health requires paying attention to the quality and nutrient density of food, but that?s where some of the food purists scare people off.? As Jonathan Bailor pointed out last week while we were recording a podcast, we want to avoid making perfect the enemy of good.? If we tell people the only way to be healthy is to eat nothing but pasture-fed meats and organic produce from local farmers? markets, we?ll lose them.? (We?d also be lying to them.)

Aside from the purists and the orthorexics, most people simply aren?t going to do all their shopping at farmers? markets.? But many of us who are health-conscious would happily opt for higher-quality foods if we knew how to find them in a grocery store ? which leads to me a new book that teaches exactly how to do that.

Rich Food Poor Food was written by Jayson and Mira Calton, the same couple who wrote Naked Calories.? Their focus is on the importance of micronutrients, vitamins and minerals in food, and after meeting them on last year?s cruise, I?d bet their diet at home is close to perfect.? I?m happy to report, however, that this book isn?t about adopting a perfect diet.? It?s about adopting a better diet, even if you do all your shopping in grocery stores.? Most of the book, in fact, is a shopping guide ? what they call their Ultimate GPS:? grocery purchasing system.

In Part One, the Caltons explain what they mean by rich foods and poor foods.? Rich foods, of course, provide the most micronutrients.? Not surprisingly, rich foods are usually unprocessed or minimally processed.? Poor foods are either devoid of micronutrients or contain additives that can potentially screw up our health ? hydrogenated oils, artificial colorings, MSG, chemical preservatives and other frankenfood ingredients.? The goal of Rich Foods Poor Foods is to guide you to the rich foods ? or at least the richer foods, given the choices available.

While explaining the importance of reading labels, the Caltons take a delicious swipe at the Eat This, Not That authors.? If you?ve read any of the many Eat This, Not That articles online, you know the authors promote almost any low-fat garbage over a high-fat version of the same (supposed) food.? The Caltons demonstrate what a lousy idea that is by comparing Lay?s Potato Chips to Lay?s Baked Potato Crisps.
Here are the ingredients for Lay?s Potato Chips:

  • Potatoes
  • Vegetable oil (sunflower, corn and/or canola oil)
  • Salt

A good choice?? Well, I wouldn?t eat them (and neither would the Caltons), but at least we?re talking about a mere three ingredients.? Compare those to the Lay?s Baked Potato Crisps preferred by the Eat This, Not That guys:

  • Dried Potatoes
  • Cornstarch
  • Sugar
  • Corn Oil
  • Salt
  • Soy Lecithin
  • Corn Sugar

Yee-uk.? As the Caltons write:

This lower-calorie, low-fat snack is not a healthier, smarter choice.? It is very definitely a Poor Food choice with ingredients that may be linked to cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, infertility, compromised immunity, accelerated aging, and numerous other health conditions and diseases.? Had you purchased this product only after a review of the Nutrition Facts, you would have opened yourself up to unwanted ingredients.

When Eat This, Not That named these potato crisps their go-to choice, they boasted, ?Baked Lay?s represents the classic potato chip at its absolute best.?? What?? Are they serious?? These crisps are not even made with real potato slices.? Far from the absolute best, the Baked Lay?s represents to us just how far we have strayed from natural foods onto a dangerous new path paved with highly processed, manufactured food-like substances.?

Part Two is the shopping guide, which is divided into the same sections you?ll find at a grocery store:? Dairy, Meat, Fish, Produce, Condiments, Grains, Baking Items, Snacks and Beverages.? Each section contains a brief introduction explaining what we should either seek out or avoid within that particular category, then provides two lists named Steer Here (rich foods) and Steer Clear (poor foods).

The lists are colorful, they?re easy to read, and (best of all) they name names.? You can find a perfect choice in a Steer Here list, but if perfect isn?t an option, you can also find some very good choices.? In the milk list, for example, the top choice is farm-fresh raw milk from grass-fed cows.? But if you aren?t willing or able to buy raw milk from a local farm, you can look for Organic Valley Grassmilk.? It?s pasteurized, but not homogenized, and the milk comes from grass-fed cows.? Or you could choose Meyenberg brand goat milk, which is also grass-fed and hormone-free.? You get the idea.

Early in my low-carb days, I bought Hood brand Carb Countdown milk.? (They?ve since changed the name to Calorie Countdown.)? That brand, not surprisingly, is on the Calton?s Steer Clear list:? the ingredients include cellulose gel, cellulose gum, artificial color, sucralose (aka Splenda) and acesulfame potassium.? Hmmm, doesn?t sound much like real milk, does it?

The Caltons recommend quite a few organic foods, but in the section on produce they provide a list of fruits and vegetables for which buying organic is basically a waste of money:? onions, sweet potatoes, avocados, asparagus and several others.? Apparently there?s little chance of those foods containing pesticide residues or being genetically modified.? There?s also a list of fruits and vegetables they recommend you buy only if they?re certified organic:? apples, blueberries, spinach, lettuce and several others.

Rich Food Poor Food isn?t pocket-sized, but I believe it would fit into a purse if you want to take it with you on shopping trips.? I doubt you?ll find every brand name on the Steer Here lists at your local Kroger or Wal-Mart, but I recognize many of them from the days when we lived near a Trade Joe?s and did much of our shopping there.? And of course there?s always Whole Foods ? if you don?t mind paying Whole Foods prices.

Again, the goal isn?t to make your diet perfect.? The goal is to make your diet more nutrient-dense.? Rich Foods Poor Foods can help you attain that goal.

Tegra 4 reference tablets use SanDisk's iNAND Extreme, match fast chips with fast storage

It's well established that NVIDIA's Tegra 4 is at least reasonably quick. It's only quick when the storage isn't a bottleneck, however, which is why SanDisk has negotiated a repeat partnership as the official storage supplier for reference Tegra 4 tablets. Pop open one of the designs and you'll find either 16GB or 32GB of SanDisk's iNAND Extreme keeping pace with the quad-core processor. The reference deal may be more than just a publicity grab: it raises the chance that companies will use the speedier flash memory in their own Tegra 4 slates. Whether or not SanDisk makes it to shipping devices, the deal could lead to balanced tablet hardware that seldom leaves us waiting.

JP Morgan Chase to slash $1 billion; cut staff

JPMorgan Chase became the latest Wall Street firm to scale back in an uncertain economy, announcing plans Tuesday to save $1 billion through various costs cuts and about 4,000 job reductions.

The bank, struggling to emerge from the shadow of a trading scandal known as the "London Whale" affair that dealt the firm its biggest ever trading loss, also issued a stark warning about the rising costs of regulation.

A frequent critic of efforts to increase oversight on Wall Street, JPMorgan said that new red tape could cost up to 10 percent of market revenues. However, the financial services giant cautioned that the effects of the Volcker Rule won't be seen for at least two to three years. JPMorgan also said it plans to add 200 more branches by 2014.

JPMorgan has instituted a number of changes to its executive suite lately, an issue JPMorgan Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon addressed when asked about whether management changes had become too disruptive, and a recent call to split the chairman and CEO roles.

The bank is "completely comfortable" with management overhauls and current leadership, Dimon said. Responding to a call to sever his joint position, the bank chief called the controversy a "sideshow". He added that the board should have flexibility to make those decisions.

The results from Italy's election continue to roil markets, which are becoming increasingly attuned to the threat of Washington's budget stalemate. Dimon said both events were unsettling investors.

Europe's debt troubles are "a roller coaster" for markets, Dimon said, adding that the threat of sequestration was a "legitimate" worry as well. Markets should be concerned by the potential for a quick and substantial jump in interest rates, should Washington fail to strike a deal on taxes and spending, he added.

The bank stated it would reduce headcount in its mortgage banking unit by between 13,000 to 15,000 by the end of 2014. Most of these employees are considered contractual and hourly workers, and not full-time, the bank said.

The bank's biggest challenges, according to Marianne Lake, JPMorgan's CFO who spoke at JPMorgan's Investor Meeting, are from regulatory issues.

Earlier in the day, Lake said that the planned cuts would be driven by savings in its mortgage unit, during a period when the U.S. housing sector has shown fairly steady improvement from the post- 2008 meltdown.

JPMorgan's cost-saving efforts come at a time when its key rivals are also moving to adjust to a volatile global economy. Goldman Sachs is reportedly preparing a round of job cuts; meanwhile, beleaguered financial behemoth Citigroup announced its own massive restructuring plans last year.

(Read more: Citigroup Axes 11,000 Jobs, $1.1 Billion in Costs)

Speaking at the investor conference earlier, Dimon said that while the company has benefited from downturns, it can maintain a 15 percent return on tangible equity.

Make Yourself At Home With Home Improvement | Thompson Real ...

Home improvement projects provide something for every homeowner, whether it is sprucing up a tired home, or preparing to get the most from a potential sale, there is no end to the benefits available. The article that follows offers terrific advice for anyone wanting to work on their home.

Shop around for the best deals. New flooring is very expensive if you do not shop around for good deals. There are bargain places and discount supply stores that will help.

An easy way to protect walls and floors from marks, and to protect your young children while you?re at it, is to pad furniture with sharp edges. Local retailers should have corner protectors and foam tapes you can use to dull sharp furniture edges or objects that your child is sure to collide with at some point. Tape down wiring to prevent accidents such as tripping over them or even more serious issues.

Before making a home purchase, get a professional to inspect it. By doing this, you do not have to look for everything that needs to be replaced or fixed. An objective professional will provide you with all the necessary information without any argument or haggling to the price of the home.

When you wish to paint a home or just a few walls, then you really need to figure out how many buckets of paint you?ll need. Taking measurements and estimating the cost of supplies is the best way to find out how much a job could cost to do. Take your time, and do calculations the right way.

When you are looking for people to help you with a home renovation project, have several alternates in mind who can help in case there is any problem. It is wise to have a backup plan in place in case something goes wrong. This also holds true in this case.

Home improvement is not just for the professionals on TV. It can be done enjoyably by almost anyone. It might just be a new paint color in your bedroom, or you could go all out and remodel your kitchen, but whatever your choice is will bring not only comfort to your home, but value as well. Get started today by using the tips from this article.

For more real estate info, visit: http://www.latimes.com/classified/realestate/. Home improvement is something that applies to everyone from time to time. There may be different motivations, but every homeowner thinks about home improvement. Regardless of whether it?s for appearance or extra money, home improvement can benefit anybody.

(AP) ? Gaza militants on Tuesday fired a rocket into Israel for the first time in three months, rattling a cross-border truce that has held since Israel's last major military offensive against the Hamas-run territory.

Militants claiming affiliation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement took responsibility for the attack, saying they fired the rocket to avenge the death of a Palestinian in Israeli custody.

The detainee, Arafat Jaradat, 30, died over the weekend after interrogation by Israel's Shin Bet security services. Palestinian officials, citing an autopsy, said the detainee was tortured, while Israel says more tests are needed to determine the cause of death.

Jaradat's death sparked protests in the West Bank, including near the town of Bethlehem on Monday.

Two Palestinian teens, ages 13 and 16, were wounded in a confrontation with Israeli soldiers. The older boy was transferred to Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital after being shot in the head and was in critical condition Tuesday, breathing through a respirator, officials said.

In the West Bank, Abbas on Tuesday accused the Israeli military of using increasingly harsh methods to clamp down on Palestinian rock-throwing protests.

"We don't want tensions. We don't want escalation," Abbas said, rejecting recent allegations by Israeli officials that he was stoking tensions for political gains.

The rocket from Gaza landed south of the Israeli city of Ashkelon early Tuesday, said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld. The rocket caused damage to a road, but no injuries, he said.

It was the first rocket fired from Gaza since Israel's last major military offensive against rocket squads in the coastal strip last November. The Hamas militant group has ruled Gaza since ousting forces loyal to Abbas in 2007.

Over the past decade, Gaza militants have fired thousands of short-range rockets and mortar shells at Israel, and Israel has responded with military strikes. In between periods of cross-border violence, informal cease-fires have taken hold.

In an email sent to reporters, militants claiming affiliation with Fatah's violent offshoot, the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, said they fired the rocket to avenge Jaradat, the detainee who died in Israeli custody. It was impossible to verify the claim. The Fatah-allied militant group has kept a low profile since the Hamas takeover.

Hamas government spokesman Ehab Ghussein denied a rocket was fired, indicating the Islamic militant group was trying to distance itself from the incident. In the past, militant splinter groups have fired rockets at times when Hamas tried to discourage such attacks.

Hamas has carefully enforced an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire that ended eight days of heavy fighting with Israel in November. Israel's army had no immediate comment.

In the West Bank, there has been an increase in clashes between Palestinian stone throwers and Israeli troops in recent weeks.

In Monday evening's confrontation near Bethlehem, the Israeli military said protesters threw "improvised hand grenades" at a Jewish shrine in the area, endangering worshippers inside.

Soldiers fired at the legs of a Palestinian throwing grenades, lightly wounding him, the military said. Later, soldiers fired rubber-coated steel pellets at demonstrators, seriously wounding one who was taken to an Israeli hospital, the official said.

Palestinian medical officials said two Palestinians, ages 13 and 16, were seriously wounded by live fire. The 13-year-old was wounded in the abdomen and the older boy in the head, the officials said.
