5 killed, at least 20 injured in Oregon bus crash

By NBC News

LA GRANDE, Ore. -- Nine people were killed and at least 20 others hospitalized on Sunday after a tour bus veered out of control on an icy stretch of freeway in eastern Oregon and rolled nearly 200 feet down an embankment, state police said.

State police reported that the driver apparently lost control of the charter bus around 10:30 a.m. on the snow- and ice-covered lanes of Interstate 84 and crashed through a guardrail before plunging down an embankment. The Oregonian newspaper reported that the bus ?tumbled nearly 200 feet before coming to a halt.

Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings told the newspaper that about 40 passengers were on the bus at the time of the crash, which occurred near milepost 227 on Interstate 84 near Deadman Pass, according to the East Oregonian?newspaper.?

Hastings told the East Oregonian that he learned the bus was returning to Las Vegas from British Columbia, Canada. ??

Rescue workers used ropes to help retrieve the injured from the scene. Westbound lanes of I-84 were closed.

The Oregonian said 18 passengers were transported to St. Anthony's Hospital in Pendleton, about 13 miles northwest of the crash scene. Hospital spokesman Larry Blanc would not say?if or how many passengers sustained life-threatening injuries, it said.

Three fixed-wing aircraft also were on standby at the Pendleton airport if needed to transport injured to hospitals elsewhere, state police said.

Authorities did not immediately identify the operator of the charter bus.

RUBEN NAVARRETTE: California Dreamers wake; UC Berkeley plans scholarship for illegal immigrants

When it comes to how California handles illegal immigrants, the state is all over the map. Not unlike the rest of the country, the Golden State can?t decide whether it wants to make life comfortable for the undocumented or make them so unhappy that it runs them off.

?Twas always thus. Consider my home state?s history over the past few decades.

In the 1980s, Republican Sen. Pete Wilson of California ? at the behest of agribusiness ? drove support for the Immigration Reform and Control Act, which President Ronald Reagan signed into law in 1986. The legislation granted amnesty to about 3 million illegal immigrants.

Then in the 1990s, when Wilson ? who had come home to serve as governor ? found himself with dismal approval ratings and a tough re-election battle, he drove support for Proposition 187, which California voters approved in 1994. The ballot initiative ? later struck down as unconstitutional ? denied illegal immigrants and their U.S.-born children access to schools, welfare and non-emergency health care.

Today, the tradition continues. And now, it?s Democrats who are being inconsistent.

One minute, Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown is signing a bill to expand educational opportunity for undocumented youth by letting them compete for scholarships to attend public colleges and universities in the state. The next minute, Brown all but ensures that more of these students and their parents will get deported when he vetoes another bill aimed at reining in Secure Communities, a program the Obama administration uses to coerce local police into enforcing federal immigration law.

Now, in a recent development, the flagship institution in the University of California system ? UC Berkeley ? has announced that it is forming a $1 million scholarship fund for undocumented immigrant students. Believed to be the largest scholarship of its kind at any university in the country, it is being funded by a donation from a private foundation. When the Dreamers Fund is established in 2013, as many as 200 undocumented students from 20 countries will be eligible to apply. The awards are in the amount of $8,000. To qualify, students need at least a 3.0 grade-point average.

The new scholarship will come in handy. While getting into a college or university isn?t usually a problem for many illegal immigrant students, paying the tuition can be. The undocumented are ineligible for federal grants or student loans. To address that problem, the California Legislature passed a law last year declaring undocumented students eligible to receive private scholarships offered by state colleges and universities.

The scholarship takes its name from the DREAM Act, legislation that would have provided a pathway to legal status and citizenship to those who attended college or joined the military. The Democratic-controlled Senate killed the bill in December 2010 when five Democrats voted against cloture. Otherwise, in the 2012 elections, Democrats might have been slapped with the label of being weak on illegal immigration.

While some Californians grumble about offering scholarships to illegal immigrants, there is really nothing wrong with it. There is a legitimate debate to be had over whether illegal immigrants should have access to public funds. Those who feel strongly that illegal immigration is destroying California certainly don?t want to see their tax dollars go to educate young people who shouldn?t be here in the first place. Continued...

I don?t agree with that point of view, but I understand it. We all should. Yet, this is private money, and the University of California is free to use it however specified by the donors. Case closed.

Besides, there?s an added benefit. In a larger sense, the Dreamers Fund is an honest acknowledgement by the University of California of a couple of things that most people don?t want to admit. First, that many undocumented students are hardworking and productive, and they deserve financial support from private individuals. And second, that Californians owe a debt to the estimated 3 million undocumented residents who call the state home. Despite what many people think, these immigrants pay taxes (sales, municipal, property). And they help keep the state?s economy humming along by maintaining the profit margins for the multitude of businesses ? farms, ranches, landscaping companies, construction firms, meat-processing factories, hotels, restaurants, etc. ? that hire them and then turn around and pay state taxes as well.

Thank you, University of California. Honesty is hard to come by in just about any aspect of the immigration debate, and it is much appreciated.

Daimler CEO wants Mercedes to regain top spot by 2020: paper

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The FBI is still searching for one of two convicted bank robbers who escaped last week from a high-rise jail in downtown Chicago by lowering themselves on a makeshift rope nearly 20 stories to the street. Kenneth Conley, 38, and his cellmate, Joseph Jose Banks, 37, escaped from the Metropolitan Correctional Center early on the morning of December 18. The pair apparently broke a window in the cell they shared, squeezed through the opening and lowered themselves to the street. They then hailed a cab to make their getaway. ...

Connecticut gives basketball coach Kevin Ollie five-year, $7 million deal

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Connecticut has given men's basketball coach Kevin Ollie a new contract that runs through the end of the 2017-18 season.

The deal, signed Saturday, is worth just under $7 million and begins Jan. 1. When Ollie was hired in September, he was signed for just one season.

"As I said in my first press conference, I want to be here a lifetime and this is a step, hopefully a great step, in the program moving forward," Ollie said.

Ollie, who turned 40 on Thursday, was hired after Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun retired. His original deal had a pro-rated value of just over $465,000, the school said.

Ollie has led UConn to a 9-2 record entering Saturday's game against Washington despite losing five underclassmen from last year's team after it was announced that the Huskies were academically ineligible for the upcoming postseason.

Ollie was greeted with a standing ovation as he walked on the court Saturday night and the student section chanted his name.

"He's shown that he can coach, that he can lead this team on the court, and academically," athletic director Warde Manuel said. "He's the epitome of an UConn Husky."

Ollie, who played point guard for Calhoun from 1991-95, was his former coach's hand-picked successor. He became an assistant at UConn in 2010, after 13 years as an NBA journeyman.

But, he had never been a head coach on any level. Manuel said that's why he waited before tendering a multi-year offer, even though he knew it could have a negative impact on recruiting.

"I'm sure it didn't help, the short-term nature of the deal," Manuel said. "But I wanted the opportunity to see Kevin and get a sense of who he was for the long term."

Ollie has quickly established himself with his upbeat and energetic style, running practices that focus on conditioning and accountability.

"Kevin moved gracefully and seamlessly into this position of immense responsibility over the course of the fall," school President Susan Herbst said. "He demonstrated to us that he is a genuine leader of extraordinary talents."

The contract also includes some stiff penalties should UConn in the future again fail to meet the minimum standards for the NCAA Academic Progress Rate.

Ollie would forfeit two weeks' salary and all postseason payments. Two consecutive years of substandard APR scores would be grounds for termination.

"I agreed to it because I have a belief system in my student athletes," Ollie said. "We're students first and we're going to get it done."

Those sanctions would be eliminated from the contract once UConn's four-year APR climbs above 930, Manuel said.

Ollie will receive $1.2 million in 2013. His base salary will be $400,000 and rest will be for speaking and media appearances. The payments increase annually to $1.34 million by 2017.

Calhoun, who is vacationing in Florida, issued a statement saying the hiring makes him feel "very good about the future of UConn basketball."

UConn women's coach Geno Auriemma, who is making $1.8 million this year and is in negotiations for an extension, said Ollie remains in a tough position, but will have the support of the entire athletic department.

"He's going to do the right thing. He's already proven that," Auriemma said. "And now he's going to get an opportunity to recruit and he's going to get an opportunity to coach."

Ouya releases SDK for $99 game console, shows off developer ...

Now that Ouya is shipping the first developer kits?of its upcoming $99 Android-based video game console, the company has opened a software developer portal, launched a software developer kit, and shown off an early preview of the user interface.

The Ouya team has also posted an unboxing video, giving us a good look at the first developer consoles.

What we?re looking at isn?t the finished hardware. While the developer kits have the same basic specs as the units that will ship to customers in April (including an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage), these special edition models have clear plastic cases.

That means you can see the guts of the Ouya game console without even opening it up ? and the same goes for the 2 wireless controllers that come with the kits.

Unfortunately the game controllers are still works in progress, and the team is still working out some of the kinks.

The developer kits also include microUSB ports that let you connect the system to a computer for Android programming and debugging. It?s not clear if the final product will have that port ? but one of the key goals of the Ouya project is to create an open platform, so I can?t see why the consumer device would ship without a microUSB port.

Meanwhile, folks interested in developing games for the Ouya who haven?t been able to snag one of the limited edition developer kits can check out the Developer Portal for details on coding for the Ouya using off-the-shelf hardware to test their games.

The Ouya is available for pre-order for $99 plus shipping, and it?s expected to ship in April, 2013.

Pros of Cheap Travel Insurance ? Steps on Air

Travel insurance is typically a short term?insurance that is meant to cover medical expenses, financial loss, and other?emergencies of travellers. This insurance will cover trips in one?s own country?and abroad. Travel insurance can be purchased for one specific trip or on an?annual basis. The insurance is designed to cover the traveller or the traveller?s?family, depending upon the policy. If purchasing an annual policy, cancellation?insurance is not covered.

What does Travel Insurance Cover?

There are three types of insurance coverage. Cancellation insurance is designed?to reimburse the traveller if the they are unable to go on the trip because?they got sick or if there is a family emergency. It can also be used in cases?where the travel company or vessel (example: cruise ship) has gone out of?business. Personal effects insurance is designed to cover personal items that?get lost, are stolen, or damaged because of weather. And the final one is?emergency medical insurance. This insurance is designed to provide adequate?medical attention and care if there should be an accident or an illness while?away. Additional optional coverage may cover car rental, dental procedures?during travel, and death during travel.

How much does Travel Insurance Cost?

Depending upon the type of insurance purchased, it can range from 5 to 7 precent?additional cost. So it can add a few hundred dollars onto the base of the?amount paid for the trip originally. Policies and company prices vary, so it is?wise to shop around for the best rate.

Should a Person Purchase Travel?Insurance?

If a person finds themselves traveling often, it is a good idea to purchase?cheap travel insurance. Having insurance offers peace of mind in the event of?something unexpected happening. There?s no reason not to consider having?insurance, especially at a low rate. Some policies that people currently have?will cover various issues. For example, a credit card that is used to book a?trip, may offer partial or total cancellation coverage. A person?s homeowner or?renter?s insurance may cover theft, even if it doesn?t happen at home. Standard?procedure is that an airline will cover a person?s baggage for $1500. If?traveling with an increased amount of valuables, it is wise to purchase travel?insurance. And medical travel insurance is beneficial especially if travel is?outside of one?s country.

Where can a Person Buy Travel Insurance?

A person can purchase cheap travel insurance in the country that they live in.?Travel insurance can be bought from a travel agent when booking the trip, from?a regular insurer, or a specialist in travel insurance. Travel insurance does?not have to be purchased at the time of booking and can be purchased right up?until before the trip itself or during travel. If a person suffers from a pre-existing?condition, they may be required to purchase travel insurance, which should be?done a few weeks in advance.

Residents flee Bangui as rebels pause for talks

BANGUI (Reuters) - Residents of Central African Republic's riverside capital Bangui fled in overloaded cars and boats on Friday and others stockpiled food and water as rebels forces paused at the city gates for ceasefire talks.

An insurgency has swept across much of the poverty-stricken but resource-rich former French colony since December 10, posing the biggest threat yet to President Francois Bozize's nearly 10 years in power and threatening a humanitarian crisis.

The government on Thursday urged Western powers France and the United States to help push back the rebel forces, though Paris said it would not use soldiers to defend Bozize's government and Washington evacuated its embassy.

"Our last chance, our only chance, is dialogue with the rebels," said Jerome Lega, a bus driver, as he weaved through traffic in the center of town.

Scores of wooden boats piled high with baggage and people crossed the Oubangui River toward Democratic Republic of Congo on the other side, while the main road south away from rebel lines was choked with overladen vehicles.

Those remaining said they were hoarding food and water and praying international mediation efforts would convince the insurgents not to enter the city shooting.

"We are hoping that Bangui will not be attacked," said Eugenie Bosso, a woman running a market stall.

Envoys from across central Africa arrived in Bangui on Thursday to lay the groundwork for peace talks with the rebels, and regional foreign ministers were due to meet in Gabon later on Friday to discuss the crisis.

A spokesman for the SELEKA rebel coalition - which said it will oust Bozize unless he honors a previous rebel peace agreement that provided payments to former fighters - said on Thursday that it would halt its advance short of Bangui to allow for the mediation efforts.

A diplomatic source said the rebels had reinforced positions around the city, effectively surrounding it.

The rebel advance has highlighted the instability of a country that has remained poor since independence from France in 1960 despite rich deposits of uranium, gold and diamonds. Average income is barely $2 a day.

French nuclear energy group Areva mines the Bakouma uranium deposit in the CAR's south - France's biggest commercial interest in its former colony.

The U.N. Security Council on Thursday said it condemned the rebel advance. Regional and western powers have been pushing for a negotiated solution.

Neighboring Chad has sent troops to help bolster CAR's weak army though it is unclear whether they would be enough to halt a renewed rebel assault on the capital.

The SELEKA coalition brings together three former rebel groups that had largely been contained in CAR's northwest by government forces in recent years, but with foreign backing.

Paris in 2006 defended Bozize's government from a rebel advance using airstrikes. President Francois Hollande on Thursday poured cold water on the latest request for help.

"Those days are over," he said.

Government soldiers were deployed at strategic sites and French troops reinforced security at the French Embassy after protesters threw rocks at the building on Wednesday.

With a government that holds little sway outside the capital, some parts of the country have long endured the consequences of conflicts in troubled neighbors Chad, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo spilling over.

The Central African Republic is one of a number of nations in the region where U.S. Special Forces are helping local forces try to track down the Lords Resistance Army, a rebel group responsible for killing thousands of civilians across four African nations.

FBI removes many redactions in Marilyn Monroe file

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? FBI files on Marilyn Monroe that could not be located earlier this year have been found and re-issued, revealing the names of some of the movie star's communist-leaning acquaintances who drew concern from government officials and her own entourage.

But the files, which previously had been heavily redacted, do not contain any new information about Monroe's death 50 years ago. Letters and news clippings included in the file show the bureau was aware of theories the actress had been killed, but they do not show that any effort was undertaken to investigate the claims. Los Angeles authorities concluded Monroe's death was a probable suicide.

Recently obtained by The Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act, the updated FBI files do show the extent the agency was monitoring Monroe for ties to communism in the years before her death in August 1962.

The records reveal that some in Monroe's inner circle were concerned about her association with Frederick Vanderbilt Field, who was disinherited from his wealthy family over his leftist views.

A trip to Mexico earlier that year to shop for furniture brought Monroe in contact with Field, who was living in the country with his wife in self-imposed exile. Informants reported to the FBI that a "mutual infatuation" had developed between Field and Monroe, which caused concern among some in her inner circle, including her therapist, the files state.

"This situation caused considerable dismay among Miss Monroe's entourage and also among the (American Communist Group in Mexico)," the file states. It includes references to an interior decorator who worked with Monroe's analyst reporting her connection to Field to the doctor.

Field's autobiography devotes an entire chapter to Monroe's Mexico trip, "An Indian Summer Interlude." He mentions that he and his wife accompanied Monroe on shopping trips and meals and he only mentions politics once in a passage on their dinnertime conversations.

"She talked mostly about herself and some of the people who had been or still were important to her," Field wrote in "From Right to Left." ''She told us about her strong feelings for civil rights, for black equality, as well as her admiration for what was being done in China, her anger at red-baiting and McCarthyism and her hatred of (FBI director) J. Edgar Hoover."

Under Hoover's watch, the FBI kept tabs on the political and social lives of many celebrities, including Frank Sinatra, Charlie Chaplin and Monroe's ex-husband Arthur Miller. The bureau has also been involved in numerous investigations about crimes against celebrities, including threats against Elizabeth Taylor, an extortion case involving Clark Gable and more recently, trying to solve who killed rapper Notorious B.I.G.

The AP had sought the removal of redactions from Monroe's FBI files earlier this year as part of a series of stories on the 50th anniversary of Monroe's death. The FBI had reported that it had transferred the files to a National Archives facility in Maryland, but archivists said the documents had not been received. A few months after requesting details on the transfer, the FBI released an updated version of the files that eliminate dozens of redactions.

For years, the files have intrigued investigators, biographers and those who don't believe Monroe's death at her Los Angeles area home was a suicide.

A 1982 investigation by the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office found no evidence of foul play after reviewing all available investigative records, but noted that the FBI files were "heavily censored."

That characterization intrigued the man who performed Monroe's autopsy, Dr. Thomas Noguchi. While the DA investigation concluded he conducted a thorough autopsy, Noguchi has conceded that no one will likely ever know all the details of Monroe's death. The FBI files and confidential interviews conducted with the actress' friends that have never been made public might help, he wrote in his 1983 memoir "Coroner."

"On the basis of my own involvement in the case, beginning with the autopsy, I would call Monroe's suicide 'very probable,'" Noguchi wrote. "But I also believe that until the complete FBI files are made public and the notes and interviews of the suicide panel released, controversy will continue to swirl around her death."

Monroe's file begins in 1955 and mostly focuses on her travels and associations, searching for signs of leftist views and possible ties to communism. One entry, which previously had been almost completely redacted, concerned intelligence that Monroe and other entertainers sought visas to visit Russia that year.

The file continues up until the months before her death, and also includes several news stories and references to Norman Mailer's biography of the actress, which focused on questions about whether Monroe was killed by the government.

For all the focus on Monroe's closeness to suspected communists, the bureau never found any proof she was a member of the party.

"Subject's views are very positively and concisely leftist; however, if she is being actively used by the Communist Party, it is not general knowledge among those working with the movement in Los Angeles," a July 1962 entry in Monroe's file states.

PFT: Brent's BAC twice legal limit during crash

Stefan LoganAP

When Lions return man Stefan Logan fielded a kick at the 4-yard line on Saturday against the Falcons, he did something extraordinarily stupid: He took a knee and downed it. At the 4-yard line.

TV cameras caught Lions coach Jim Schwartz calling that, ?the f?king stupidest thing I?ve ever seen.? Now Logan has been benched.

?I won?t be [returning kicks] this Sunday,? Logan confirmed today. ?I?m mad, but at the same time there?s nothing I can do about that. That?s coach?s decision. I blame myself. I?m not blaming the coaches, I blame myself. I?m my worst critic.?

Logan didn?t have much of an explanation for why he downed the ball.

?It was a messed up play by me and I have to live with it and move on from it. It?s just a bad play by me and I have to pay the consequences and I have to live with it. I just have to work through it and just be ready for whenever your opportunity comes back up,? Logan said.

Schwartz said that if Logan can?t be trusted not to down the ball at the 4-yard line, then he can?t be trusted to return kicks.

?Part of a returner?s job is to know where he is on the field. Saying ?I didn?t know where I was, I thought I was in the end zone,? is not a valid excuse. Your job as a returner is to know where you are on the field, particularly after we had gotten a safety,? Schwartz said.

Frankly, Schwartz?s decision to bench Logan is long overdue, regardless of his bonehead play last week. Logan is dead last in the NFL with a 21.3-yard kickoff return average and 16th with a 9.1-yard punt return average, and he has six fumbles this season.

Still, Logan is confident in himself going forward.

?Things happen. I didn?t lose the game,? Logan said. ?The game was already over. So it?s not like I lost the game for us, but you can look at it however you want to look at it. We?ve all struggled as a team so far. Not just one individual. I?m like the quarterback on special teams. When the camera goes on special teams it comes straight to me so if anything happens on special teams as far as muffing a punt or a guy running into me or something like that it?s going to be my fault because the light is on me.?

The reality is that Logan is wrong when he says the game was over. It wasn?t over. The Lions were losing by 13 points with 1:21 remaining at the time of Logan?s blunder, so they certainly weren?t in good shape, but teams have come back from being down 13 with 1:21 remaining and gone on to win. In fact, just this season the Lions came back to force overtime after trailing the Titans by more than 13 with less than 1:21 remaining. In that game, Logan fielded a kick with the Lions down by 14 with 1:16 remaining. Fortunately for the Lions, when Logan downed that kick he really was in the end zone. (Apparently Logan thought at the time that the game was over, but his teammates still fought their way back into it.)

Logan?s ?the game was already over? statement doesn?t speak well for his competitiveness, but Logan said he still expects to be an NFL return man in 2013.

?I?ll just keep moving forward whether it?s with Detroit or another team,? he said.

Given Schwartz?s comments about Logan, it will probably not be with Detroit.

A Savory Retreat: Food & Wine in Australia's Beautiful Barossa Valley

Kingsford Homestead A Savory Food and Wine Retreat in Australias Picturesque Barossa Valley

By Jessica Festa

?How do we enter the wine cellar?? I ask Sally, one of the owners of Kingsford Homestead, a historical food and wine hotel located at the edge of South Australia?s Barossa Valley.

We walk through the slate flagged entrance, over sandstone tiles, imported from Edinburgh, until we reach a cedar buffet dresser in the hallway. There are some magazines stacked on top, as well as a bowl of fresh cherries. Sally smiles and points to the table.

I frown. ?I don?t understand. Where is the cellar door??

Her husband Pat comes to join her and together they open the chest to reveal a set of stairs leading down into an dimly lit stone cellar filled with over 400 local and international wines.

Commissioned in 1856, the two-story Georgian building is a 5-star boutique homestead featuring seven well-appointed rooms with views overlooking the vineyards and countryside. Pat and Sally are the hosts, and love encouraging visitors to really experience the flavor of the Barossa through their all-inclusive program. Guests can help themselves to fully stocked fridges of beer, wine, bubbly and spirits and indulge with a drink in their Outdoor Bush Bath, a luxury bathtub set in the property?s secluded forest.

After canapes and drinks on the patio overlooking the gardens and rolling hillsides, I join the group I am traveling with as they make their way downstairs for the first epicurious adventure in the Barossa: A candlelit degustation dinner in Kingsford Homestead?s wine cellar.

While each dish has a tantalizing flavor, made more intense by using locally sourced ingredients, the most innovative selections are from their ?Kingsford on a Plate? series. Inspired by Chef Stuart Oldfield, the dishes showcase ingredients used in recipes during the 1856 history of Kingsford with a gorgeous modern twist. The shining star is the six-hour slow-cooked beef daube, which would once have been a simple beef and vegetable stew, but has since been reinvented with the addition of a Barossa Shiraz reduction. The meal is paired with the homestead?s signature Barons of the Barossa labels, which come from local winemakers like David Franz, Peter Lehmann and Wendy and Tony Brookes.

The other menu options are also delicious, including a Poached South Australian king prawn served with celeriac, avruga and chives, local beetroot with goats cheese cr?me, an international selection of creamy cheeses with soft mould crackers and fig paste, and a delicious dessert of fruity roasted rhubarb, buttery hazelnut shortbread and citrus twist of orange mascarpone. As a pairing to the meal, we enjoy on the homestead?s signature Barons of the Barossa labels, which come from local winemakers like David Franz, Peter Lehmann and Wendy and Tony Brookes.

A 1959 Daimler

The next morning, Pat drives us up to the end of Kingsford Homestead?s long dirt driveway to meet our tour guide for the day, John Baldwin of Daimler Tours.

?John is very particular about his car,? explains Pat. ?He doesn?t like to get it dusty.?

I?m immediately confused about how someone who leads driven tours around the Barossa Valley can be so nervous about his car getting dirty; that is, until I see the 1959 Daimler parked at the top.

Now I understand why John?s company is called Daimler Tours. The company?s philosophy is not to offer pre-planned itineraries, but to get to know its guests and base the tour off what people want. We let John know that while some of the group is interested in history, others would like to learn more about the area?s culinary offerings.

The Future Of?The Barossa?s Wine

Driving past endless vineyards and rows of red City of Belfast roses, we make our way to Yelland and Papps?in the heart of the Barossa Valley.

?These guys are our future,? explains John. ?They?re setting a standard for the future of the Barossa Valley.? In fact, their first wine came out in 2007.

We enter a space that is clean and rustic adorned with antique and handcrafted furnishings. A charming wooden hutch, built by Susan?s (the winery owner) grandfather, showcases homemade jams and chutneys. Their bar is crafted from recycled wood from a 27 Chevy, and the menus are made of brown recycled paper.

?We started doing this in a spare room in our house,? says Susan. ?Once the business began to grow, we bought this space so we could really experiment and make our own grapes.?

?We want people to immediately realize we?re different when they walk in,? explains Susan. ?We?re focused on sustainability. We grow fig trees, mulberry bushes, walnuts, have a veggie garden and a sheep shed and we like to make use of what we have for our products.?

Outside, the group enjoys a French picnic among the vines with a meal of bread, cheese, jams pork rillett, prosciutto and a gorgeous selection of chutneys homemade from family recipes.

We first sample their Delight Vermentino. The winery is unique in that they are the only ones blending Vermentino with 100% Barossa Valley fruit. With a light body and citrus aroma, it?s made for ?drinking not thinking,? which is reflective of the entire Delight Series. Next, we sample their 2011 Delight Vin De Soif, with 69% Grenache, 15% Mataro, 14% Shiraz and 2% Carignan.

?We hate that people stop drinking red when the weather warms up,? says Susan. ?We want to encourage people to continue drinking red even when it?s summer.?

The red is chilled and light, with easygoing flavors of red cherry, raspberry, red plum and cranberry. While the winery offers the more complex Devote and Divine series, the relaxed picnic atmosphere perfectly matches the breezy wines.

Old-World Barossa

It?s good we?ve rested up, as it?s now time for the group to leave and burn off the French bread and charcuterie by biking four miles from Nuriootpa to Angaston via the Barossa Valley Bike Trail. The section of the bike trail we?re traversing takes us on a paved path through endless vineyards, golden wheat and canola fields and vibrant patches of roses with scents so strong it permeates the cool air.

When we arrive at the English/Scottish town of Angaston, John arranges for our bikes to be picked up and we make our way to Yalumba, the oldest and largest family-owned winery in Australia. Open since 1849, the business has been passed down from generation to generation and remains a family enterprise to this day.

?We?re also the only winery in Australia and one of the only in the world that has its own barrel making facility,? explains Benny, who has been working in various roles at Yalumba for 16 years. Continuing the tour, Benny points out The Signature cellar.
?Our signature wine is a Cabernet Shiraz appropriately named The Signature because once a year we put the signature of one of our dedicated workers on the barrel.?

While the tour is lovely, the winery is best explored through the palate, as we soon learn during a tasting of their Pewsey Vale Edan Valley Riesling 2012 and The Signature.

The Riesling is pale straw in color, with intense fruit flavors of lemon and lime and a hint of crushed stone however, The Signature steals the show. A full-bodied red wine, the varietal is a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that is iconic of the Barossa. It?s a deep red, with intense fruit flavors as well as hints of American oak, which come from their cooperage where vintners flavor, season, temperate and construct their own wine barrels by hand. The experience is reminiscent of old world Barossa, especially as we tour the valley in a classic car from 1959.

To add to the epicurious experience, we stop at the Barossa Valley Cheese Company. Taking up half the room is an enticing case of ripened cheeses. John has brought us here at just the right time; as it turns out we have walked in at the beginning of a free tasting session.

?We specializes in handcrafted soft cheeses,? says Jan of the Barossa Valley Cheese Company. ?Soft cheeses are ripened from the outside to the center, so flavors move inward.?

While the Barossa Geo is elegant with a smooth and creamy texture, the white mold Barossa Camembert is rich with slight hints of mushroom. The slightly sweeter cheeses include the Barossa Washington ? silky with a flavor that seems to build in intensity as it moves about the palate.

Then tasting ends with a bit of royal treatment ? two goal milk cheeses ? the robust Le Petit Prince and my personal favorite, the tangy and nostalgic Le Petit Princess. While all the cheeses are enjoyable, I can?t help but think how nicely they would pair with a fine wine. Luckily, there are endless wine experiences in the Barossa Valley.

In The Wine Lab

While we?ve visited old world and modern wineries, the group has yet to actually create their own blend. This is why John brings us to Penfolds,?another lovely winery located in the heart of the Barossa.? After putting on our lab coats, we go up to the lab to create our blends based on the Penfolds Bin Series. We mixed Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre in beakers using different percentages until we concoct an enjoyable blend.

?If you?re making wine for yourself there?s no right or wrong,? explains Noelene, our wine lab instructor. ?That being said, one hint is that Grenache is often the predominant variety, but not always.?

First we taste each individual variety. While the Grenache is very aromatic, the Shiraz is a bit fuller and spicier, adding richness and weight. The Mourv?dre on the other hand is more complex and earthy in character, with hints of licorice.

At first I feel trepidation, but once I make my first blend, relying mainly on the spiciness of the Shiraz, I feel like maybe I have a future in?the wine industry.

A Delicious End

As our tour comes to a close at TV personality Maggie Beer?s Farm Shop, it becomes overwhelmingly clear that it?s simply impossible to ignore the epicurious culture of the Barossa. Along with highly quality coffee and interesting tea blends like Rainwater Mint, Sunday Roast, Orange Earl and Wine and Roses, the shop is a mecca of free samples. Walking around, we taste marmalades, jams, sauces, vinegars, oils, marinades, pastes, vino cottos, sugos and, of course, her signature p?t?s, all made by Maggie and her staff.

As I sit outside sipping a chocolate marmalade tea and indulging in an enormous homemade lemon merengue tart, I?m enveloped in the incredible scenery and delectable culture of this region.

A peacock wanders by the table while turtles swim in the cloudy blue onsite pond. People don?t do things in the Barossa unless they can do them well. This philosophy is the lesson of the day, and I?ve learned it well through intimate wine tastings, locally-sourced cheese samplings, world-class sustainable restaurants and celebrities that actually care about the community. It?s refreshing and satisfying in the way only a well-aged wine and pheasant farm p?t? can be. It?s true Barossa Valley culture at its finest.

Japan's Abe gets second term, to tap allies for cabinet

TOKYO (Reuters) - The lower house of Japan's parliament approved Shinzo Abe as prime minister on Wednesday, giving the hawkish lawmaker a second chance at the top job as the country battles deflation and confronts a rising China.

Abe, 58, has promised aggressive monetary easing by the Bank of Japan and big fiscal spending by the debt-laden government to slay deflation and weaken the yen to make Japanese exports more competitive.

The grandson of a former prime minister, Abe has staged a stunning comeback five years after abruptly resigning as premier in the wake of a one-year term troubled partly by scandals in his cabinet and public outrage over lost pension records.

His Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) surged back to power in this month's election, three years after a crushing defeat at the hands of the novice Democratic Party of Japan.

"I want to learn from the experience of my previous administration, including the setbacks, and aim for a stable government," Abe told reporters before the lower house voted him in as Japan's seventh prime minister in six years.

Abe looks set to pick a cabinet of close allies leavened by some LDP rivals to fend off the criticism of cronyism that dogged his first administration. The line-up will be announced around 0700 GMT.

Japanese media have said Abe will name former prime minister Taro Aso, 72, as finance minister, ex-trade and industry minister Akira Amari as minister in charge of a new economic revival headquarters and policy veteran Toshimitsu Motegi as trade minister. Motegi will also be tasked with formulating energy policy in the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster last year.

Loyal Abe backer Yoshihide Suga is expected to become chief cabinet secretary, a key post combining the job of top government spokesman with responsibility for coordinating among ministries.

Others who share Abe's agenda to revise the pacifist constitution and rewrite Japan's wartime history with a less apologetic tone have also been floated for posts.

"These are really LDP right-wingers and close friends of Abe," said Sophia University professor Koichi Nakano. "It really doesn't look very fresh at all."

CHINA TIES, JULY ELECTION

The yen has weakened about 9.8 percent against the dollar since Abe was elected LDP leader in September. On Wednesday, it hit a 20-month low of 85.38 yen against the greenback on expectations of aggressive monetary policy easing.

Abe has threatened to revise a law guaranteeing the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) independence if it refuses to set a 2 percent inflation target.

BOJ minutes released on Wednesday showed the central bank was already pondering policy options in November, concerned about looming risks to the economy. The BOJ stood pat at its November rate review meeting but eased this month in response to intensifying pressure from Abe.

Abe also promised during the election campaign to take a tough stance in territorial rows with China and South Korea over separate chains of tiny islands, while placing priority on strengthening Japan's alliance with the United States.

Japanese media said Abe would appoint two low-profile officials to the foreign and defense portfolios.

Itsunori Onodera, 52, who was senior vice foreign minister in Abe's first cabinet, will become defense minister while Fumio Kishida, 55, a former state minister for issues related to Okinawa island - host to the bulk of U.S. forces in Japan - will be appointed to the top diplomatic post, the reports said.

Abe, who hails from a wealthy political family, made his first overseas visit to China to repair chilly ties when he took office in 2006, but has said his first trip this time will be to the United States.

He may, however, put contentious issues that could upset key trade partner China and fellow-U.S. ally South Korea on the backburner to concentrate on boosting the economy, now in its fourth recession since 2000, ahead of an election for parliament's upper house in July.

The LDP and its small ally, the New Komeito party, won a two-thirds majority in the 480-seat lower house in the December 16 election. That allows the lower house to enact bills rejected by the upper house, where the LDP-led block lacks a majority.

But the process is cumbersome, so the LDP is keen to win a majority in the upper house to end the parliamentary deadlock that has plagued successive governments since 2007.

"The LDP is still under the critical eyes of the public. We need to earn their trust by get things done one by one," Abe told party lawmakers ahead of the lower house vote.

"First on the agenda is economic recovery, beating deflation and correcting a firm yen and getting the economy back on the growth path. If we don't pursue this target, an upper house election next year will be a tough one for us."

Smart TV owners seemingly tuning out most apps

4 hrs.

They may be called smart TVs, but that doesn?t stop the vast majority of us from using them as basic boob tubes. A new NPD Group report claims that most people use their Internet-enabled televisions to stream video services like Netflix or Hulu Plus, and?? actually, not much else.

Streaming music services manage to entertain around 15 percent of smart TV owners, but all of the more ballyhooed interactive aspects of Internet-enabled TVs???think Facebook, Twitter, Web browsers, and all those apps, games, and email widgets that come preloaded in newer HDTVs???are left completely untouched by most people.

The NPD Group?chalks the trend?up to a few different factors, the biggest of which being the simple fact that most people consider televisions sets to be, well, televisions???not computing devices. The proliferation of secondary Internet-enabled devices (like consoles and Blu-ray players) and the rise of local digital streaming options (like AirPlay, DLNA, and Samsung AllShare) may also be both confusing customers and cannibalizing traditional smart TV services, NPD theorizes.

We?ll add another possible factor: The molasses-slow processors in most smart TVs make anything beyond simple content streaming a major usability pain. Trying to browse your Facebook News Feed on a television is often a tremendously laggy exercise in frustration.

Fortunately, consumer disinterest in the Internet-enabled bells and whistles may just make the basic video-streaming functions of smart TVs more pleasant to use going into the future???at least if manufacturers listen to the NPD?s closing advice: ?Focus less on new innovation in this space and more on simplification of the user experience.?

Internet Marketing 2013 | Mike Henry - Online Marketing Specialist

Internet Marketing is what that can make or break a website. Doing it in the right direction can make it a successful online business while steps in the wrong direction may only waste time and money and no one will like to waste his time and money in useless trials so before taking any marketing decision, it is important to know what actually is internet marketing. Internet Marketing is actually a broad term that includes many small terms in it so let?s start discussing the most popular terms and understand the depth of internet marketing.

SEO

SEO is an abbreviated form of the complete term Search Engine Optimization. Search Engine Optimization is a technique used by the SEO experts to bring a site in the top rank of major search engines. If you want to see the traffic coming to your sites from the search engines then you need to do the search engine optimization of your site and for this you need a good SEO expert. The series of activities that are performed by the SEO experts are keyword research, writing the quality guest posts for good ranking sites, writing quality PR and submitting to the high ranking PR submission sites, writing news for the best news sites. Keyword research is done to make the content keyword rich and the site can be ranked higher in the search engines with the keyword.

SEO techniques can be broadly classified into Black Hat and White Hat. A site can have good ranking in the search engines in short time by using the black hat techniques while white hat requires time, hard work and knowledge to rank a site. Although results can be seen quickly by using the black hat techniques but still white hat is preferred over black hat because the results obtained from black hat are not reliable. A webmaster should go with white hat techniques if he or she wants to get quality and long term traffic to a website.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing

You may have heard of commission agents in your local market and this form of marketing also works similarly. The business of affiliate marketing involves two parties, seller and the affiliate marketer. A seller that has a product to sell registers on a marketplace of affiliate marketers explains the details of his products or services and allows the interested affiliates to start the job. The interested affiliates can pick a product or service, study the details and write some quality articles and include the affiliate link anywhere in the article. After finishing the writing process, the affiliates can then submit their articles to high ranking sites that allow publishing articles with affiliate links. All sites do not allow affiliate links so before starting the process, make a list of sites that will allow the articles with affiliate links.

What is an affiliate link? Affiliate links are the links that helps the sellers to identify the identity of a marketer. If a product sells up then the profit earned can be shared by the seller and affiliate marketer. The distribution of income can be 50:50 or 75:50. Mostly affiliate marketers earn more than the sellers because they are actually responsible for the entire selling process and they can also adopt any strategy of selling they think to fit best in the situation. If a webmaster is going for affiliate marketing then he or she should promote their online business in a good source where good affiliates can be found. Clickbank and Commission Junction is the hub of affiliate marketing business.

A good internet marketing expert will always advise to start with SEO and move to affiliate marketing later if SEO alone does not bring sufficient success to your site.

Obama cuts vacation short to deal with fiscal crisis

HONOLULU (Reuters) - President Barack Obama is cutting short his Hawaiian holiday to leave for Washington on Wednesday to address the unfinished "fiscal cliff" negotiations with Congress, the White House said on Tuesday.

As the clock ticks toward a January 1 deadline, efforts to avert a sharp rise in taxes and deep spending cuts have stalled, worrying world financial markets.

Obama and congressional lawmakers left Washington on Friday for the Christmas holidays with talks to avert the fiscal disaster in limbo.

When Obama arrives back in Washington early on Thursday, the focus will shift to the U.S. Senate after Republicans in the House of Representatives failed to pass their own budget measures last week.

Obama is expected to turn to a trusted Democratic ally, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, to help craft a quick deal.

White House aides began discussing details of the year-end budget measure with Senate Democratic counterparts early this week, a senior administration official said on Monday

The president will also need at least tacit approval from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to insure Republicans will permit passage of what is likely to be a stripped down bill that prevents taxes from rising on all Americans.

The measure may not, however, contain difficult spending cuts both parties had sought to speed deficit reduction. It is unclear how the president will seek to address the draconian across-the-board government spending reductions set to go into effect early in the year without a deal.

McConnell, who is up for re-election in 2014, has been a cautious participant in the process. His spokesman has said it was now up to Democrats in the Senate to make the next move.

Once clear of the Senate, the fiscal cliff legislation must also win enough bipartisan support to pass the House of Representatives, which failed last week to approve Speaker John Boehner's proposal to extend tax breaks for all Americans earning less than $1 million a year.

Conservative Republicans balked at any tax increases at all and withdrew support for the measure, which never came to a vote. Some Republican votes will be needed to pass any Senate bill.

BIG DAY THURSDAY

The next session of the Senate is set for Thursday, but the issues presented by the fiscal cliff - across-the-board tax increases and indiscriminate reductions in government spending - were not on the calendar.

The House has nothing on its schedule for the week, but members have been told they could be called back with 48 hours notice, making a Thursday return a theoretical possibility.

Obama and his family arrived in Hawaii early on Saturday and have devoted their time to spending the Christmas holiday together. First Lady Michelle Obama and the couple's two daughters are to remain in Hawaii, suggesting the president hopes to rejoin them if a deal is struck

Before the talks ran into trouble, Obama had originally been expected to stay in Hawaii - where he was born - until well into the first week of January.

But many observers are pessimistic that lawmakers, who have repeatedly come close to agreement only to see negotiations collapse, can wrap up a deal in the few days left before the end-of-year cut-off point.

The impact of a blown deadline would likely be first seen in financial markets, which wobbled last week after House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner's "Plan B" tax and spending effort fell flat.

Obama had offered a deal early last week that would have let tax rates rise for those making more than $400,000 a year, a higher threshold than the $250,000 income level he originally wanted to subject to higher tax rates. However, Boehner was unimpressed with the offer and pursued his alternative instead.

The president appears to have set consideration of fiscal cliff issues aside during his four days in Hawaii. His only public events have been to attend the funeral of long-time Hawaiian Senator Daniel Inouye on Sunday and a Christmas Day visit to soldiers at a Marine Corps base near the vacation home his family is using in Kailua, Hawaii.

He has spent his time with family and friends, with excursions to play golf, exercise, go hiking or to the beach.

'Mr. Cao Goes to Washington' Film Recounts an American Dream

One of the key parts of the immigrant experience is the journey itself. For two Asian-American filmmakers, moving to the United States provided them both opportunity - but under very different circumstances. Mingh Nguyen, a 40-year old filmmaker based in Los Angeles, arrived in the US from Vietnam in 1982 when he was nine years old. His travels began a year earlier as one of the Vietnamese boat people. Nguyen?s parents lost their business and home after the fall of Saigon. The decision was made to flee and done in secret. ?Somebody would get a boat, and would calculate how many people would be on it, and at night you kind of sneak out and get on that boat,? Nguyen said. ?You get out to sea and you try to reach one of the refugee camps in Thailand, the Philippines or Malaysia. We actually got to Thailand.?

It took Nguyen five attempts before finally getting away. ?We tried to go all as a family and then we got caught,? he said. ?My dad was in jail for eight nine months. The women and kids, like me, were in the jail for about two weeks before we were let out.?

Nguyen remembers living conditions in the refugee camp were crowded, and families split up. Men worked in the field while the women and children performed other jobs. ?My mom was doing cooking duties and things like that. We all had to sleep together in this really huge barracks like a warehouse - like hundreds of people,? Nguyen explained.

After spending a year in a refugee camp off the coast of Thailand, Nguyen received sponsorship from a Catholic group in the United States. He was later flown to San Francisco and settled in San Jose, California.?Transition to a new American way of life was difficult. Nguyen started fourth grade and was scared.??I went to school and I didn?t speak or write English very well. So for the first few months the teacher just put me in a corner until I was able to get caught up with English and was able to join the other students,? Nguyen said.? He admitted being frightened, but said watching television helped him learn English.

Nguyen went to the University of California-Berkeley where he received a degree in molecular biology degree, and followed that with a job at the U-S Department of Agriculture. But Nguyen said he was bored.?He recalls writing short stories at night and later taking creative writing courses.? ?I remember I was enjoying watching movies and going to see plays, so I tried writing fiction and that really opened the world for me,? Nguyen said. Several of his short stories were published in literary journals.

He attended film school and ultimately switched careers. His feature-length directorial debut is the movie ?Touch? - a romantic-drama about an unlikely friendship between a shy Vietnamese-American manicurist and an auto mechanic who is trying to keep his crumbling marriage alive. The film has won a number of awards on the independent film circuit. Looking back on his life and professional path, Nguyen advised: ?With hard work you can follow your dream.?

A CHINESE AMERICAN JOURNEY

For Chinese-American filmmaker Leo Chiang, coming to America was also a parental decision. The 42-year-old San Francisco-based director was 15 when he left Taiwan.??My parents had decided to send me and my two siblings to the U.S. to get educated, basically.? I think that for the rest of the world at that time, American universities were seen as the best,? Chiang said.

Chiang traveled to San Jose, California where family members were there to help him.? Chiang admitted it was not always easy to adjust to his new environment.??Initially it was difficult to blend in.? Not speaking the language very well and not knowing the culture very well was a bit difficult,? Chiang said. ?I definitely had to go through the English as a second language classes.?

Chiang succeeded and received a degree in electrical engineering at the University of California.? It led to a job with Apple Computers. But like Nyguen, he had his doubts.??I just really couldn?t see myself doing that for a long time. And I was always interested in film, I was a cinephile,?? Chiang said.? He applied to the University of Southern California?s graduate program in film production ?as a fluke? and was admitted.?Chiang quit his job with Apple and became a documentary filmmaker.

The career change was preceded by risks and foresight - initiated, he said, by his life as an immigrant.? ?I think it would be foolish of people to kind of dive in and come over here without preparation,? Chaing said.??I think that for folks who are interested in coming to the U.S., they really need to find out about American culture and about the places they plan to move to, what it's like, what the surrounding is like, what the environment is like,? Chiang said.

The award-winning filmmaker?s current documentary, ?Mr. Cao Goes to Washington? is the true story about the first Vietnamese-American elected to the US Congress.? Critics call the film a fascinating character study of New Orleans Congressman Joseph Cao.?"Mr Cao Goes to Washington" will air in January on PBS, the non-profit American public broadcasting service.

Confused About Commercial Real Estate? Follow ... - Maynas Eric

Everything that you should have has to be in line when you are purchasing real estate. Regardless of how skilled you think you are, it is possible that you lack knowledge in a certain aspect of the field. There are some excellent tips on commercial real estate ventures here to guide you.

Learn to understand the commercial real estate metric called Net Operating Income (NOI). To be a success, you need to be able to stay on the positive number side.

Feng shui might improve your commercial investing profits when used correctly in the interior design of your properties. Two of the basic insights of this approach, removing clutter and emphasizing open space, are sound design principles that make a property more attractive.

TIP! When you write your letters of intent, start off by dealing with the larger issues, then move on to the smaller ones later. By focusing on the big stuff first, you will have more pleasant negotiations, and you will be better able to manage small matters in the end.

Before you jump into a commercial real estate deal, you want to get a lay of the land first. This means considering and examining the general income levels in the area, how high or low unemployment rates are, and looking at the hiring practices of employers within the vicinity of where you intend to invest. A home that is in a great area, like next to good schools and parks, and has jobs available, will have a higher value than surrounding properties.

Commercial real estate involves more complex and longer transactions than buying a home. Understand, however, that this additional time and effort often translates into higher returns.

There are a number of significant differences between commercial and residential loans. For example, commercial loans often require a higher down payment. To find a good commercial loan, work your network of professional contacts to learn which lenders are best and whether there are any investment possibilities available in your area.

TIP! Be sure to see and enter into good deals. Professionals in real estate are able to recognize great deals.

Find out how any firm you have under consideration defines success. Ask how they will make determinations regarding space requirements, property selection and other matters that are important to you. You can benefit a lot if you know things like this.

Prior to selling commercial property, have it inspected first by a professional. Have any issue that the inspector finds repaired right away.

Ask your broker to explain the methods he uses to negotiate deals before hiring him. Inquire into their specific credentials and training; do not be afraid to ask for references. You want to ensure that the broker has good ethics, and is capable of obtaining the best deals possible. A quality broker will be happy to share examples of their past work with you if you ask, including both deals that were successful and those that weren?t.

TIP! You need to understand that each property has for itself, a lifetime. Don?t make the mistake of overlooking the fact that you will need to put a substantial amount of money into the property to keep it well-maintained.

When making decisions between one commercial property and another, think big. Obtaining adequate financing is a major undertaking, whether you opt for a ten-unit apartment complex or a twenty-unit apartment complex. Generally, this is much like the principle of buying in bulk; the more units you buy, the lower the price per unit.

Of course, it is never wise to assume you have enough information about any important financial matter, and this includes commercial real estate dealings. Continue learning and applying the information you gather, such as what you?ve read in this article, to boost your rank within the market. Make use of this pertinent information, and profit from your endeavors.

TIP! If you are considering more than one property, be sure to obtain a checklist for the tour site. Accept the proposal responses during the first round, but before going further, notify all the property owners involved.

Jack Klugman, famed for TV role on "The Odd Couple," dead at 90

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Emmy-winning actor Jack Klugman, a versatile, raspy-voiced mainstay of U.S. television during the 1970s and early '80s through his starring roles in "The Odd Couple" and "Quincy, M.E.," died on Monday at the age of 90.

Klugman, whose pairing with Tony Randall on "The Odd Couple" created one of television's most memorable duos, died at his home in the Woodland Hills section of Los Angeles following a period of declining health, according to his son, Adam Klugman.

"He went very suddenly and peacefully ... he was there one minute and gone the next," the actor's son told Reuters, adding that the elder Klugman had "been in convalescent mode for awhile."

He said his father had lost his ability to walk and spent much of his time in bed. His wife of four and a half years, Peggy Crosby, former daughter-in-law of the late singer Bing Crosby, was with him when he died, his son said.

In addition to his TV success, Klugman enjoyed a healthy career on the stage as well as in movies and made successful forays into horse breeding and political activism. Not even the loss of a vocal cord to cancer in 1989 could silence him for long.

Klugman gained fame for playing slovenly sports writer Oscar Madison in the sitcom "The Odd Couple" - a role he also had played on Broadway - and then as a crusading coroner in the crime drama "Quincy, M.E."

"The Odd Couple," based on Neil Simon's play about two disparate divorced men forced to share an apartment, ran for five years on the ABC network, starting in 1970, but was never a hit during that time. Only through reruns did Klugman and co-star Randall, who played neat-freak Felix Unger, leave their mark as one of U.S. television's great sitcom teams.

"We had wonderful respect for one another, we liked working together but we never became friends," Klugman told the Miami Herald in 2005. "I think that was on account of me. I was withdrawn. I never let anybody get too close."

It was not until Klugman's cancer surgery, following years of heavy smoking and throat problems, that a friendship developed with Randall. Klugman had no voice and was glumly resigned to the end of his acting career, but with Randall's encouragement, he returned to the stage.

They resurrected their "Odd Couple" roles in a 1993 TV movie, and Klugman paid tribute to Randall, who died in 2004, in the memoir "Tony and Me: A Story of Friendship."

"Quincy, M.E.," which ran on NBC from 1976 to 1983, saw Klugman assume a heavy behind-the-scenes role. He recalled that he spent 20 hours a day working on the series, and he twice sued its producer, Universal Studios, for a share of the net profits he claimed were owed to him.

LOVE OF HORSES

Horses were perhaps Klugman's first love - both as a keen gambler starting in his teens and later as a breeder. One of his horses, Jaklin Klugman, finished third in the 1980 Kentucky Derby and earned millions as a stud.

Born Jacob Joachim Klugman on April 27, 1922, he grew up in a tough Philadelphia neighborhood. In 1945 a loan shark was after him due to gambling losses so he fled to Pittsburgh, where he studied drama at Carnegie Tech and worked several jobs to settle his debts.

Two years later in New York, Klugman appeared opposite Henry Fonda in the national stage production of "Mr. Roberts." In 1960, Klugman received a Tony nomination for his supporting role in the musical "Gypsy."

In Hollywood, Klugman had notable supporting roles in such films as "12 Angry Men" (1957), "Days of Wine and Roses" (1962) and "Goodbye, Columbus" (1969).

He won the first of three Emmys in 1964 for an appearance on the legal drama "The Defenders." Klugman and Randall each received Emmy nominations for each of the "Odd Couple" seasons, with Klugman winning in 1971 and 1973 and Randall in 1975.

Klugman also earned four Emmy nominations for NBC's "Quincy, M.E." His character, who stepped out of his role as medical examiner to solve murders that flummoxed the Los Angeles police, never had a first name.

Klugman is survived by Crosby, his second wife, whom he married in 2008 after a 20-year courtship; and two sons, Adam and David, from his first marriage to late "Match Game" panelist Brett Somers. Klugman and Somers were separated for more than 30 years of their 54-year marriage, which ended with her death in 2007.
